The DRC holds some of the world’s most critical mineral reserves, including cobalt and coltan, making it central to global supply chains and the global energy transition.

Yet in the eastern provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu, and Ituri, competition over minerals continues to fuel conflict, displacement, and instability, while halting development.

More than 7 million people are internally displaced (as of 2026), many forced to flee multiple times due to long-term conflict.

Goma, a major humanitarian hub, hosts hundreds of thousands of displaced people under severe strain on food, water, healthcare, and shelter.

Our work

Local Engagement

We have established a network of community-based Peace Huts, convened by church and interfaith leaders. These spaces bring together representatives from civil society, local government, ethnic communities, women’s and youth groups, NGOs, and businesses—including mining actors—to address root causes of violence.

Since 2021, Goma’s churches, including the Anglican Churches, have trained 600+ leaders in conflict transformation, delivered weekly peace radio broadcasts, and issued joint statements promoting reconciliation.

International Engagement

GCPB launched the Goma Call for Peace, an international petition with 450,000+ signatories, presented to the United Nations.

The petition calls for:

  • Immediate cessation of hostilities
  • Civilian protection and humanitarian access
  • Withdrawal of external forces
  • Constructive dialogue between Kigali and Kinshasa
  • Greater international investment in peace efforts

Investor & Diplomatic Engagement

In 2025, the first Investor Commission, chaired by Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, convened investors, companies, and diplomats to analyse security scenarios and explore how responsible business can support peace initiatives. These dialogues are ongoing.

Cornerstone Churches

The Cornerstone Churches, St Mary’s Warwick, St John’s Edinburgh, and Christ Church Winchester, play a central role in anchoring the GCPB’s work to build a movement in support of peacebuilding and reconciliation in conflict-affected communities, ensuring that peacebuilding is both locally rooted and globally connected.
